Bankroll: how to manage your budget at the casino

Chips split into stacks to manage a budget

Your bankroll is the amount you have decided to devote to gambling and could lose entirely without consequences for your life. Everything else — strategies, systems, game selection — comes after that definition, because it is the only variable you genuinely control.

How much

The test is not a universal percentage, it is a question: if this sum vanished tonight, what would change tomorrow? If the answer touches rent, bills, groceries or instalments, the sum is wrong. Money set aside for gambling is money already spent on entertainment: the calculation happens before, not after.

Two practical rules that always hold: never play with borrowed money, and never use a win to raise your stake level. A win is part of the same bankroll, not a bonus arriving from outside.

How to split it

A monthly bankroll split into sessions protects against two things: the bad evening and the urge to win it back immediately. A reasonable split is four or five sessions, each with a fixed amount and a finishing time.

Within a session, what matters is stake size relative to the total. With stakes of 1-2% of the session bankroll, ordinary variance does not knock you out on the third hand; with stakes of 20%, five unlucky hands are enough. This holds for any game but weighs most where variance is high — the high-volatility slots described in How gaming floors and slot machines are designed are the typical example.

A loss limit and a win limit serve the same purpose: ending the session on a decision made with a cool head. The first prevents chasing, the second prevents handing everything back to the table. Both are written down before you start.

The tools the casino owes you

Every serious operator provides, in the account settings, at least: deposit limit, loss limit, session limit, cooling-off period and self-exclusion. These are binding tools — once set, lowering them takes effect immediately and raising them requires a waiting period.

If you cannot find them in your account, that is a signal worth stopping on: they are licence requirements almost everywhere, and their absence says something about the operator. How to check that licence is explained on our dedicated page.

Why chasing losses does not work

The reasoning "I double until I recover" sounds solid because a win does arrive sooner or later. The problem is that the losing run needed to empty the bankroll is far shorter than it seems, and the table limit interrupts the progression exactly when the largest bet would be required. The house edge, meanwhile, stays identical at every step: the numbers are in Blackjack and roulette: the real odds and the mistakes that cost.

The psychological form of this error — the feeling that "it has to turn now" — is the same one that feeds the rituals described in Superstitions at the table: why rituals do not change the odds.

A method in five lines

Decide the monthly figure. Split it into four sessions. For each session fix a loss limit, a win limit and a finishing time. Set the same limits in the gaming account, so they do not depend on your willpower at the wrong moment. Record the result of each session: at the end of the month you will have real data instead of an impression.

If at any point the account makes you uncomfortable, self-exclusion is the fastest tool available and requires no explanation to anyone.

Play responsibly, 18+ only.
